Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a Finnish architect and designer whose work helped shape modern Scandinavian design. Known for his organic forms, innovative use of materials, and human-centered approach, Aalto designed buildings, furniture, and household objects that balanced functionality with warmth.

In 1935, Aalto co-founded Artek in Helsinki together with his wife Aino Aalto, art promoter Maire Gullichsen, and art historian Nils-Gustav Hahl. The name “Artek” reflected the company’s mission: to merge art and technology in modern living. Artek became the platform for producing and promoting Aalto’s furniture, including his famous bentwood pieces such as the Stool 60 and the Paimio Chair.

Aalto pioneered techniques for bending laminated wood, creating strong yet graceful curves that became a hallmark of his designs. These innovations allowed mass production without losing the handcrafted quality. Artek’s philosophy extended beyond products—it promoted modernist ideals, exhibitions, and cultural dialogue.

Today, Artek remains a leading design brand, producing Aalto’s classics alongside new works, and continues to represent the blend of functionalism, natural materials, and humanism that defined Aalto’s vision.
