Hautala’s process is meticulous—beginning with pencil sketches on graph paper, moving through coloured-pencil and gouache studies, before arriving at the final acrylic painting. His art is characterized by balanced geometric form, vibrant colour harmony, and contemplative visual rhythm.

He has created numerous large-scale commissioned public artworks and collaborated on architectural colour schemes with prominent Finnish architects. His works feature in major collections such as Kiasma (Helsinki), Museum Albertina (Vienna), The Brooklyn Museum, Göteborgs Konstmuseum, EMMA (Espoo), and more.

Hautala was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1989 and the Commander of the Order of the Lion of Finland in 2001. He served as artist professor at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts from 1995 to 2000
