Magnus Læssøe Stephensen (1903–1984) was a multi-talented Danish architect and designer celebrated for his elegant, unornamental aesthetic infused with influences from Bauhaus and Japanese design. Graduating from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1931, he seamlessly moved between architecture and industrial design, creating everything from buildings and furniture to cutlery and ceramics.
He designed refined silverware and tableware for iconic brands such as Kay Bojesen, Royal Copenhagen, and Georg Jensen. His work is defined by subtle forms, clean lines, and a warm simplicity that avoids excess decoration. Stephensen’s “Japanese functionalism” became a hallmark of his approach—strikingly minimalist yet richly human.
Beyond his product designs, he helped shape the Danish design scene by transforming exhibitions and advancing the ethos of democratic, everyday design. His contributions earned him major awards, including multiple gold medals at the Milan Triennale and the Eckersberg Medal. Today, Stephensen is remembered as a pioneering voice of the Golden Age of Danish design—his timeless creations remain celebrated for their quiet elegance and enduring appeal.
