Large vintage leather medicine ball from the 1940s–1950s
A beautifully patinated vintage leather medicine ball (Turnball), weighing 2 kg, from a German sporting goods dealer in Hannover, dating to the mid-20th century.
Crafted from thick, hand-stitched cowhide panels, this type of medicine ball was standard equipment in gyms, schools, and fire brigade (Pompier-Haus) training halls across Central Europe. Lighter than the larger 3–5 kg versions, the 2 kg weight was especially suited for general physical education and partner exercises.
This example retains its original patina and stamped markings “Turnball 2 kg” and the dealer’s stamp with Rettnier-Hannover”, linking it to a German sports outfitter.
Medicine balls like this embody the robust, functional design of pre-modern gym equipment and are today sought after as both decorative objects and pieces of sporting history.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. The leather is supple with a rich, even patina, seams intact, no structural damage.
Dimensions: Approx. Ø 25 cm and weight: 2 kg.
Perfect as a statement piece in an interior, for display in a gym, studio, or home, or as part of a collection of vintage sporting goods.
