Mid 20th century sidetable by Margaret Nordman for Stockmann

This 1930-40s sidetable, designed by Margaret T. Nordman for Oy Stockmann Ab, showcases a beautiful lacquered birch finish and detachable edging. Its 85cm diameter and 60cm height offer functional versatility while the expert craftsmanship from Keravan Puusepäntehdas ensures long-lasting quality. Some surface wear and slight cracking add character to this timeless piece.

Margaret Travers Nordman (1898–1981) holds a distinguished place in Finnish design history as the first woman in Finland to secure full-time employment in the furniture industry—and to build her entire professional career in the field.

Educated at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture between 1918 and 1921, she became one of the early graduates in furniture design. In 1928, she was appointed as a lead designer in the furniture department of Stockmann’s department store, where she stayed for 35 years, shaping everything from individual furniture pieces to entire interiors of Stockmann’s stores and international exhibitions.

During her tenure, she helped lead the modernization of Stockmann’s furniture line, introducing functional, modernist design to a broad audience. Among her key collections were Anna, Atlantic, and Elvi, reflecting her refined aesthetic and adaptability to evolving trends.
