Gunnar Ander (1908–1976)
Gunnar Ander was a Swedish architect and designer whose career spanned furniture, lighting, glass, and decorative arts. Trained as an architect, he became known for his ability to combine functionality with refined modernist aesthetics.
Ander collaborated with Lindshammars Glasbruk, where he helped shape the company’s design identity with innovative glassware. He is perhaps best remembered for his long partnership with Ystad-Metall, for which he created elegant candelabras, candleholders, and other decorative objects in wrought iron and brass. His designs are characterized by clean lines, lightness, and a distinctly Scandinavian sense of proportion.
Today, his work is considered a hallmark of Scandinavian Modern design, sought after by collectors worldwide for its timeless elegance.
Ystad-Metall (1919–1969)
Ystad-Metall was founded in 1919 in the town of Ystad in southern Sweden and quickly became one of the country’s most important producers of decorative metalwork. The company specialized in brass, bronze, iron, tin, and silver objects, creating everything from functional household items to highly stylized decorative pieces.
Many leading Swedish designers collaborated with Ystad-Metall, including Gunnar Ander, Ivar Ålenius-Björk, and Carl-Einar Borgström. Together they helped define the brand’s aesthetic: clean, well-crafted, and in tune with the ideals of mid-century Scandinavian Modernism.
Ystad-Metall ceased operations around 1969, but its designs remain highly collectible, with its candelabras, vases, and metal objects often appearing at auctions and in design collections worldwide.
