Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were a Danish design duo whose partnership, Hvidt & Mølgaard, became one of the most respected names in mid-century Scandinavian furniture. Trained as architects and designers, they combined precision craftsmanship with functional, modern aesthetics, often using innovative production techniques.
Their breakthrough came in 1950 with the AX Chair, one of the first Danish chairs designed for industrial production using laminated, molded wood. The chair’s sculptural curves and light construction reflected their commitment to both form and function, and it became a symbol of post-war Danish modernism.
Over the years, they designed a wide range of furniture—chairs, tables, and storage units—characterized by clean lines, organic shapes, and high-quality materials such as teak and oak. Many of their pieces were produced by leading Danish manufacturers including Fritz Hansen and Søborg Møbelfabrik.
Hvidt & Mølgaard’s designs remain highly sought after by collectors and are celebrated for their timeless elegance and contribution to the international reputation of Danish modern design.
