Red clay bowl from the 1960s by Kyllikki Salmenhaara
A red clay bowl/pot by Finnish ceramist Kyllikki Salmenhaara. The item measures appr. 16 cm across and is glazed along the rim. It is stamped KS on the side.
Kyllikki Salmenhaara (1915–1981) was a pioneering Finnish ceramic artist and designer, recognized as a leading figure in post-war Nordic design. Educated at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki, she spent much of her career at Arabia, creating pieces distinguished by rustic textures, organic forms, and innovative glazes.
Her signature works—tall, slender vases and wide, shallow bowls—often left areas of clay unglazed to emphasize the material’s natural beauty. Salmenhaara received multiple prestigious awards at the Milan Triennale during the 1950s and 1960s and was awarded the Pro Finlandia Medal in 1961.
Beyond her artistic achievements, she was a passionate educator, becoming Finland’s first professor of design and applied arts at Aalto University. Today, her ceramics are highly valued by collectors and design lovers for their timeless character, authentic craftsmanship, and deep connection to the Nordic landscape.
