Sculptural 1970s Copper Table Lamp by Aimo Tukiainen for Moonlight

A striking piece of Finnish brutalist design: a sculptural table lamp in solid copper, designed by sculptor Aimo Tukiainen and produced by Oy Moonlight Ltd. The lamp's dramatic, wing-like upper form sits on a rugged, bark-textured stem — every surface hand-worked in molten copper, giving each piece its own unrepeatable topography of ridges, folds, and light-catching facets. When lit, the open structure casts warm, irregular shadows across the room, turning the lamp into a living sculpture as much as a light source.

About the Designer — Aimo Tukiainen

Aimo Tukiainen (1917–1996) was one of Finland's most significant 20th-century sculptors. He is best known for the equestrian statue of Marshal Mannerheim in Helsinki, one of the country's most recognizable public monuments. Beyond this signature commission, his body of work spanned monumental sculpture, portraiture, and medal design, and he held leadership roles chairing both the Artists' Association of Finland and the Association of Finnish Sculptors, making him a central figure in the country's postwar art establishment.

In the late 1960s, Tukiainen turned his sculptural eye toward domestic design, creating a series of lighting objects in cast copper for the Finnish manufacturer Oy Moonlight Ltd. Produced under the name "Moonlight," these pieces — table lamps, wall lights, and ceiling fixtures — carried his sculptor's hand directly into functional form: molten, folded copper surfaces reminiscent of bark, rock, or geological strata, in keeping with the raw, tactile spirit of Scandinavian brutalism. Today, original Moonlight pieces are sought after by collectors of Nordic mid-century design, prized both as working lamps and as small-scale sculptural objects in their own right.
