Bent Karlby (1912–1998) was one of Denmark’s most distinctive 20th-century lighting designers, known for his sculptural forms and warm, atmospheric light. Trained at the Technical School in Aarhus, Karlby began his career as an architect and artist before dedicating himself to lighting design.
From the 1940s through the 1970s, he worked closely with the Danish manufacturer Lyfa, creating an extensive range of pendant lamps, wall lights, and chandeliers. His early designs often featured organic curves and signature “peephole” perforations that cast playful patterns of light. In later years, his style shifted toward bold geometric shapes—cones, cylinders, and arcs—paired with rich materials and carefully controlled illumination.
Among his best-known models are the Peanut pendant in opal glass, the layered Snowball lamps, and the striking Pan series of wall and ceiling fixtures. Karlby’s work balanced decorative appeal with functional lighting, making it both practical and artful.
Today, Bent Karlby’s designs are sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts, valued not only for their craftsmanship but also for the timeless quality that allows them to fit seamlessly into both vintage and contemporary interiors.
